Welcome back to another edition of Catskill Crew my friends. Hope you enjoy the read and I’ll see ya out there!

VOTE: MOUNTAIN MEMORY

I made a new game — kinda by accident. Catskill Mountain Memory. A classic memorization game that started as a one-off prototype and turned into something I can't stop playing.

There are fifty wooden tokens. Twenty-five pairs. Each token is embossed with classic Catskill icons like black bears, hemlocks, and axes. Flip them over, test your memory, and see if you can match them. They come in a drawstring pouch so you can throw it in your pack so you can play at home or on the go. It’s simple and way more fun than I expected.

I've been playing solo to stay sharp (which I am not) and with friends to see who's got the better memory (definitely not me). Turns out it's too good to keep all to myself.

If enough people want one, I'll look into making a batch.

FOLIAGE

The Catskills are a patchwork of microclimates — fog on the ridge, sunshine in the valley, frost settling over the peak. The weather shifts with every step, but the trees follow a steady seasonal rhythm.

The progression of autumn foliage begins with white and green ash trees that fade to yellowish-purple, soon joined by red maples blazing scarlet across the hills. Yellow birches and quaking aspens join in with bright ochre.

Then, sugar maples — the centerpiece of Catskill color — wash the slopes in orange and red. Sassafras and black cherry fill the canopy with warm amber, while the hickories wait a little longer to glow golden-brown.

As the colors cascade downhill, the oaks hang on to their rusty red and bronze hues against bare hillsides. Beeches cling to copper leaves, some lasting through winter. And just when it seems the color is gone, the tamaracks close the show, shimmering yellow in the wetlands.

From peaks to valleys, the sequence never unfolds exactly the same way twice. But it always ends the same: a last flicker of color, a gust of cold wind, and the forests and their inhabitants settling down to slumber.
